The Royal Society of Medicine Conference

"Essential Acute Dermatology for General Physicians and GP's"

Monday 18 June 2007

 A conference entitled "Essential Acute Dermatology for General Physicians and GP's" will be held at the Royal Society of Medicine,1 Wimpole Street, London W1G 0AE, on Monday, 18 June 2007.

 

The aim of the meeting is to discuss the diagnosis and management of acute dermatological problems at the primary-secondary care interface. The emphasis will be on conditions that may initially present from general practice to acute medical receiving units, and the main focus will be the requirement for referral, diagnosis and differential diagnosis, and the early management and investigation. Some new drugs in skin disease will also be discussed, especially where these may have side effects that are relevant to physicians outside dermatology.

COURSES FOR NURSES

Management of People with Skin Conditions

General Information

This is a new module introduced by The University of Nottingham in June 2004. The prevalence of common skin disorders is increasing and 80% of those who could benefit from professional advice do not currently access the health care system. There is a need for practitioners working in the primary and acute care health setting to have knowledge in this area. The content is divided into themes and can be accessed as a full module of 8 contact days or individual themed days.

The module considers:

•  Core skills in dermatology

•  Pharmacology and the skin *

•  The adult with acute skin disease *

•  The adult with a chronic skin disease *

•  The infant, child and young person with skin disease *

•  The older person with skin disease *

•  Skin cancer and its treatment *

•  Ultra violet light and its use in skin disease *

( * can be accessed as individual themed days)

Students will be encouraged to critically appraise their own practice through reflection in order to promote evidence-based practice and clinical decision making.

CREDITS

The module attracts 20 credits at Diploma or Degree level. It can be taken as part of the Tissue Viability Pathway, the Combination Studies pathway or accessed as an individual module.

Theme Days

A Certificate of Attendance will be provided for those who access individual theme days.

 

ASSESSMENT

Diploma Level:

Assessment is through a written assignment of up to 5,000 words using a model of reflection to analyse an event in the management of an individual with a skin condition.

Degree Level:

Assessment is through a written assignment of up to 5,000 words on a selected aspect of contemporary practice in the management of skin conditions which will include an action plan to move practice forwards.

VENUE

This module will normally be delivered at the Nottingham Centre.

Date

The module will run from 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 June and 13, 20, 27 July 2005.

The next module will run from 26 October, 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 November and 7, 14 December 2005 .

King's College in conjunction with St John's Institute of dermatology runs several courses for Nurses. St John's Practical Dermatology This course is a mixture of lectures and seminars and provides nurses with the opportunity to update their clinical skills in relation to Dermatology.

Practice Nurse Course
This course commences every September

The Nightingale Institute of Nursing and Midwifery in conjunction with King's College and St John's Institute also run a number of courses. 4 courses run at level 2 and 3 ENB N25 Developments in Dermatological Nursing.

Skin Disorders Current Practice and Managing Skin Disorders
These are both distance learning courses and they aim to prepare nurses for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with common skin disorders.

This course is held at The Postgraduate Centre, City Hospital, Birmingham and is open to Dermatologists and other professionals with an interest in Dermatology. The programme includes a structured lecture programme on thirty different aspects related to contact Dermatitis, instruction in practical aspects such as patch testing and a visit to a local cosmetic producer are included.

The fee for the five -day course is £795 including lunch and refreshments and £695 to dermatologists within recognised training posts.
